| Description: | The process of tatooing the lip is executed in strict seclusion by a women specialised in this. The lip tatooing is a "rite de passage" for girls entering into womenhood. Only the lower lip is tatooed. With thorns of acazias the woman punctures the skin of the lower lip and rubs black colour and soot into it. The candidate does her best to surpress the pain. The puncturing and dyeing is repeating several times. After having completed tatooing, the lip is thickly swollen and this is why it is supported by a small stick tied with bands to the head. |
