| Description: | Heterostegina depressa has an alternation of generations in which a 2-4 mm-sized gamont (megalospheric generation) alternates with an 1-2 cm-sized agamont (microspheric generation). During multiple fission of the agamont, the protoplasm flows out of the calcareous test and then divides into 1000 to 3000 daughter cells, the young gamonts. The film shows the multiple fission of the agamont. In addition to gamont and agamont forms another megalospheric generation has been found which looks like a gamont of Heterostegina depressa but which reproduces asexually. According to a new hypothesis this form is not part of the life cycle of Heterostegina depressa but belongs to a separate species. Also the multiple fission of this unnamed new species, Heterostegina sp., is shown in the film. |
