According to the decision of the Bund-Länder Commission for Educational Planning and Research Promotion (BLK) from October 2007 IWF Knowledge and Media will be closed down by the end of 2010.

During the liquidation period online access is kept up and the delivery of materials worthy of preservation is prepared and conducted. Liquidation is managed in an overall project in three project groups (media, technology, administration).

Since November 2008 Prof. Dr. Thomas Knieper is the Managing Director of IWF, since June 2008 he is Professor of Media and Communication Studies at the Technical University of Braunschweig, thus realising the cooperation treaty between the university and his second activity in Göttingen.
